first time oil painting

January 28, 2008

here are two paintings which I did in secondary 3!

copy of Da Vinci’s Ginevra

Ginevra de’ Benci (Born 1457) was a lady of the aristocratic class in 15th century Florence, admired for her intelligence by Florentine contemporaries. She is the subject of one of only 17 extant paintings attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The oil-on-wood portrait was permanently acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., USA, in 1967 for 5 million dollars paid to the Princely House of Liechtenstein, a record price at the time.

My first try at oil painting, did when I was in secondary 2. Sigh I know it doesn’t look like the original painting, but I did try my best, honestly. I feel that the main area of skill in which I lack in is capturing the expressions, the emotions and the soul of the person (which is exactly why painting a person is one of the hardest part of art). I could definitely improve on that. The curls of the hair too, it was not done with elaborate details as they should have been done. The proportion of the iconography also looks a little weird, especially at the chin area where in the original painting it was sharp and well-defined. Come to my own copy of the masterpiece however, the chin area appears to be a little too round. What I feel that I have done well, however, is the blending part. Oil paints are nice to blend, they dry much slower as compared to other mediums such as acrylic and watercolour.

Although the first attempt at oil paint is not very successful, I would definitely still give it another try if I have the chance to, maybe the next time I would start with something more simple and easier to copy such as sceneries or still life. (:

This is first sketch in my course-work sketch book!

nanking presentation LA

This is the template which I have done for Language Arts Oral Presentation. This is the first time I have ever tried out making a power-point template.
Our presentation is based on the theme of “Nanking Massacre”.

The black strip at the side is a black and white version of graveyards while the res splashes at the top right hand corner of the template represents the blood shed.

mural designs

BEFORE:

CSI library before painting

AFTER: mural design

This painting of the mural on the walls is currently located CSI school, Banglore City.

At the library area, the books were initially locked up in the cupboard. After cleaning up the library area, we put a fresh coat of paint on the walls and then started out to design the murals. They may seem a little kiddish but I feel that they quite suit the likings of children who are of primary school age.

hope for tomorrow

January 13, 2008

a better tomorrow

medium: water colours on water colour paper

I have drawn this  to provide encouragement to all the unfortunate cancer patients. The gloomy blue tree at the left-hand corner represents a dying tree, as many patients may think that getting cancer is like the end of the world. However, there can be hope if they believe, as we can see from the bud that is sprouting out from the side of the tree, representing a “new” life for the cancer patients. The lady, who covers up half of her chest which has been lost due to cancer (breast cancer), is suffering from depression as suggested by the dull gloomy colour scheme. However, there is also lots of hope for her, as we can see from the bright sun that is above her head and another bud sprouting. The usages of contrasting colours in the painting, namely, green vs. brown and blue vs. orange is to convey the message of “suffering vs. hope”. Last but not least, we have t he sprinkles in red, orange, yellow and white, which represents the liveliness and hope for tomorrow!

Now looking back on what I have done, I feel that the painting itself seems to be really flat, with no three dimensional effects. If I were do to this art assignment over again, I will make an effort to improve especially on that area.

A GREEN DOT

sec three aep gormesthe stealthy gorme

Nanyang Girls’ High School 90th Anniversary Art Exhibition

Location: Singapore Management University (SMU)

Time: August 2007.

As part of the Art Elective Programme, the Secondary Three students were assigned the task of making/constructing garden gornmes using clay. The theme was based on Environment and modern gornmes. Environment is a big issue around the globe now in the 21st century and Nanyang has also played its part in protecting the enviroment.

The first photograph comprises of all the gornmes which the secondary three AEP students have done. The second shot is a close-up on the gornme which my groupmates, Jin Su Huan, Lucy Chen, Ng Hui Kin and I have done. It shows an IT-savvy modern gornme who is a theft and trying to steal a barrel of IT gadgets such as I-pod, mouse and key-pad. The structure is made entirely out of clay and painted with a coat of acrylic paint.

bangalore regional cip

The above shots are taken during the Secondary Three End of Year Global Classroom Programme.

(Community Involvement Programme at Bangalore City, India)

Almost everything was an eye-opener, from the people, the culture, the environment, the food and Bangalorians’ way of living. Sadly none of these shots were taken by myself but I find them really interestig so I decided to upload them here. Credits go to my fellow CIP trip mates Ethel Ng and Rachel Ho from class 414′08.

The First photograph was taken when we visited a local school-The IGL Primary School. The second shot was taken at our worksite, where we were supposed to carry out works such as digging out the grass, chunko-ing and teaching the students simple, basic English Language, which of course we had to do planning before-hand. We also helped out by serving the children lunch. Of course, there was much more to what we could have done and what we The third shot was taken when we visited a village located 2 hours’ away from the hustle and bustle of Bangalore City. There are many different villages located at the country side of India and Gangasandra is one of them. The people’s hospitality, their warmth, their smiles despite the poor living conditions, had a great impact on me. Learn to treasure, learn to cherish and most importantly, we have to learn to be satisfied with life. The last shot was taken when we visited the local wet market. There are numerous, countless stray dogs on the streets of Bangalore but it’s a good thing that they are all tamed.

“ONE TRIP, A THOUSAND AND ONE DIFFERENT FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS”

I will be posting some of the photos which I took myself in the next post!

Kucinta Cat Collage

January 2, 2008

Doing collage pieces have never been more fun than this! This 5 collages are a combined effort from Jing Ying, Hui Kin and I, we did it at the start of secondary when Mr. Ellis was still our AEP teacher. I think we did this for school kids, as an educational kit for them. There are quite a number of materials which we used in this collage, including sand and paper! The main character of the collage is of course, the Kucinta Cat! Enjoy! (:

cover page: we have decided to mail this piece of project work to Mr. Ellis!

Scene 1: The Kucinta cat walks into the forest and listen to the cicadas singing.

Scene 2: The Kucinta cat is resting on a log with white ants crawling on it.

Scene 3: The Kucinta cat hides behind a bush as a big yellow machine chops down the trees.

Scene 4: The Kucinta cat talks to the fern and feels sorry for the fallen tree.

Scene 5: The Kucinta cat walks away and sings.

secondary three OBS logo

January 1, 2008

The logo shows someone diving, which is something physically demanding and challenging, like what we would do at OBS. The theme for OBS, “sef-discovery” has been written in a dissolving like manner to create a sense of mystery. The white part of the heart shows that we want to discover what is within us, challenging ourselves at the same time at OBS. For the star, it is usually high up in the sky, and by reaching out for the stars, we are challenging ourselves and breaking the limites.
